One of the most popular solar panels are the photovoltaic solar panels. Photovoltaic solar panels create electricity by using what is called the photovoltaic effect. This effect occurs when specific materials spur electrical currents when they get exposed to the protons contained in sunlight.

A photovoltaic solar panel is basically a very large series of semiconductor PN junctions. Half of each the junctions are electron deficient, while the other half is rich in electrons. The purpose of the photovoltaic cell is to produce an electric field over the junction between the two halves of the crystal, and to allow electrons to spread from the electron-rich half to the energy deficient side. A potential barrier is between the p and n-type sides of the crystal which prevents any more electrons from moving through the junction until the solar cell is exposed to sunlight, and frees electrons that have enough energy to break the barrier.

Most of us learned in high school that light from sun-rays is composed of packets of energy known as Photons. Each photon carries energy with an amount that is corresponding to the wavelength of the light it is contained in. When a photon hits the photovoltaic panel it causes 1 of 3 reactions. It can pass through the panel, it can get reflected, or it can be absorbed by the panel. When the photon is absorbed by the panel, its energy is captured by an electron in an atom of the solar cell, allowing it to escape from its normal positioning, flow through the junction and then fill a hole. The electrons then move through a load, allowing you to use it as energy, and complete the circuit by recombining with the holes that remain. The entire process allows you to use energy from the sunlight at an efficiency of around five to fifteen percent. This process can happen repeatedly over the entire lifetime of the solar cells.
